understanding the coat

Two coats doing two very
different jobs.

Golden Retrievers have a double coat — a dense, soft undercoat that regulates body temperature, and a longer outer coat that's slightly water-resistant and protects against sun, debris, and the elements. In North Texas, both layers are working overtime.

The outer coat does the glamour work: the feathering on the chest, legs, tail, and ears that gives Goldens their signature silhouette. The undercoat does the invisible work — insulating against heat in summer (yes, really) and cold in winter. When you see your Golden panting in July, that coat is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Removing it — by shaving — actually makes the dog hotter and more vulnerable to sunburn.

The challenge is that undercoat doesn't just stay in the coat. It loosens, tangles, and ends up everywhere in your home, and if it isn't removed regularly through brushing and professional de-shedding treatments, it mats — especially behind the ears, under the armpits, and in the leg feathering.

✦ The Texas twist

North Texas heat and humidity accelerate shedding and increase the chance of hot spots — a painful skin condition that develops under trapped, matted undercoat. Regular de-shedding treatments at Bark & Purr are the most effective preventive measure. Not a luxury. Actual skin health care.

The zones that mat first

If you're brushing at home, focus on these five areas — they mat fastest because of friction, moisture, and density:

👂
Behind the ears
The most common mat location. Collar friction + ear moisture = tangle. Check weekly.
🐾
Armpits (axillary)
Leg movement constantly rubs this area. Mats here can restrict movement before you notice them.
🦵
Back leg feathering
Long feathering on the "pants" area collects debris and tangles quickly after swimming or wet grass.
🌿
Groin area
Heat + moisture. Mats here can get severe quickly and be missed until they cause skin irritation.
🦴
Collar line
Especially under thick collars. Check when removing the collar and run fingers through the neck coat.

the bark & purr approach

What your Golden's
sPAW Day actually looks like.

At Bark & Purr, Golden Retrievers get the full Tranquil Tail Grooming® treatment — built around their coat's actual needs, not a one-size-fits-all process. Here's what to expect from a standard appointment:

🛁
Pre-bath brush-out
We work through any tangles before the bath. Wet mats set tighter — so we tackle them first.
🚿
De-shedding shampoo & treatment
A specialized de-shedding treatment loosens and lifts undercoat during the bath — removes significantly more than brushing alone.
💨
High-velocity blow-out
Removes the loosened undercoat while the coat is still damp. This is where most of the shedding volume leaves the building — not your car.
✂️
Trim & tidy
Feathering cleaned up, paw pads tidied, ear canals cleaned, nails trimmed. Your Golden leaves looking polished, not processed.
✦ No cage dryers. Ever.

Every pet at Bark & Purr is hand-dried by a team member. For Goldens, this is especially important — it means we catch every tangled section, every hot spot risk, every area the undercoat is clinging. The cage dryer is faster. The hand dry is better. We do the better thing.

After every visit: the T.A.I.L.S. Report

When you pick up your Golden, we send you home with a wellness assessment — what we noticed about their coat condition, any skin observations, and what to watch for before the next visit. Groomers see your dog's skin in a way most people — including vets in a routine exam — simply don't. We take that seriously.

grooming schedule

How often is often enough?

There's no single right answer — it depends on your Golden's individual coat density, your home tolerance for shed management, and how active they are outdoors. Here's how to think about it:

🗓️
Every 8 weeks
The minimum for coat health. Works if you're brushing 3–4× per week at home and your dog has a lighter undercoat.
🗓️
Every 10 weeks
The sweet spot for most Goldens. Regular enough to stay ahead of matting, flexible enough to fit most schedules.
Shedding season (spring/fall)
Consider tightening to every 6–8 weeks. A professional de-shed at the start of season can dramatically reduce what ends up in your house.

The Den Club membership makes consistent grooming easy — monthly bath and brush included with priority scheduling, so you never have to think about when to book next. Your Golden stays on schedule. Your couch says thank you.

common questions

Golden Retriever grooming FAQ

How often should a Golden Retriever be professionally groomed?
Most Golden Retrievers benefit from professional grooming every 8 to 12 weeks. During peak shedding seasons in spring and fall, more frequent visits — or at-home brushing every other day — help manage the undercoat and prevent matting.
Should you shave a Golden Retriever in the Texas summer?
No. Shaving a Golden Retriever's double coat is one of the most common and damaging mistakes we see. The undercoat actually insulates against heat and protects the skin from sunburn. Removing it leaves the dog hotter and at risk of sunburn and coat damage. Regular de-shedding treatments are the right approach for Texas summers — not shaving.
How do I prevent my Golden Retriever from matting?
Brush your Golden at least three times per week, focusing on the feathering behind the ears, under the armpits, and on the backs of the legs — these are the first places mats form. Use a slicker brush followed by a metal comb to ensure you're reaching through to the undercoat, not just skimming the surface. Professional grooming every 8 to 10 weeks removes undercoat before it tangles.
My Golden hates the groomer. What can I do?
At Bark & Purr, we use Tranquil Tail Grooming® — a fear-free, low-stress approach that adapts to each dog's threshold. If your Golden is anxious, tell us at booking. We adjust the pace, take breaks, and never push past what the dog is comfortable with. We'd rather do a shorter groom well than a full groom badly.
